Our lives are constantly surrounded by an influx of imagery that our minds selectively filter, internalize and remember for different reasons. The process of remembering images and the emotional aspects connected to them is the departure point of Kristine Karlshøj Leopold’s artistic practice. Through accessing her own mental and emotional archive she recalls something from the past such as a conversation, a dream or the actions of a stranger, and tries to remember not just the scene, but also
her feelings, how it felt in her body and what she was thinking at that specific moment in time.

She translates these memories and feelings through different processes such as painting, drawing, printmaking or collage until she reaches a point when these layers of memory, emotion and artistic process are united. In turn, these images become a visual vocabulary that Leopold reconstructs into non-narrative formats, arranging her works as fragmented elements with no clear beginning or end; the works become similar to film stills where the viewer is encouraged to look, imagine and continue a story in their own way. By sharing and passing on this collection of scenes, Leopold welcomes the viewer into a world of discovery.
